The biggest early decision in a weighbridge purchase isn't the brand — it's whether the deck sits in a civil pit (flush with ground level) or above ground (pitless). Both use the same weighing technology underneath — the same class of load cells, the same indicator logic, the same accuracy standards — so this decision isn't a tradeoff in measurement quality. It's entirely about the site: the available space, the civil budget, the local drainage conditions, and how the equipment needs to be accessed for maintenance over its working life.

Pit-Type Weighbridge

The deck sits in an excavated pit, flush with the surrounding ground, so vehicles drive straight on with no ramp. This uses less overall site footprint — a real advantage on a constrained urban or industrial plot — and gives easy access for heavy vehicles since there's no gradient to manage at all, which matters for the heaviest loaded vehicles a site expects to weigh. The cost is the civil excavation itself: digging, lining, and finishing a pit to the deck's dimensions is a meaningful construction project before the weighing equipment is even installed, and pits can be prone to water accumulation in high-rainfall areas if drainage isn't designed properly — a pit that floods, even briefly, is both a maintenance headache and a potential source of measurement error until it's pumped out and dried.

Pitless (Above-Ground) Weighbridge

Foundation-less Weighbridge

In practice, the choice usually comes down to three questions asked in order. First: is there a real civil budget and timeline for excavation, or does the site need to be weighing vehicles as soon as possible? Second: what's the site's drainage situation — is standing water after rain a realistic risk in a pit? Third: is this installation permanent, or is there a meaningful chance the operation relocates within the equipment's working life?
