01Overview

An unmanned weighbridge automates the sequence a manual operator otherwise runs by hand: identify the vehicle, capture a stable weight, log the transaction, and control site access — without needing staff present around the clock. Built from the same weighbridge deck and load cells as a manned site, plus an automation layer, so it isn't a different class of hardware, just a different operating model on top of it. Sites move to unmanned operation for one of two reasons, usually both: the volume of vehicles makes a human operator a bottleneck during peak hours, or the site needs to keep weighing outside normal staffed hours — a mandi during harvest season, a quarry running a night shift, a recycling yard accepting deliveries around the clock.

  4. 04The boom barrier opens automatically for an authorized, completed weighment; stays shut for unrecognized vehicles or an incomplete weighment, which is what actually enforces the process rather than just recommending it
  5. 05A traffic light signals the driver when it's safe to proceed onto or off the deck, so a driver unfamiliar with the site still gets a clear, unambiguous instruction with no operator present to give one verbally

Staffing a gate around the clock

A manned weighbridge needs a trained operator present every hour it's open — including nights, holidays, and whatever hours the business actually needs to receive vehicles. Automation removes that constraint entirely rather than just making one operator faster.

Queue times during peak hours

A single operator working the ticket line during a harvest rush or a busy dispatch window is a hard ceiling on how many vehicles a site can process per hour. An automated in/out cycle removes the human as the bottleneck step.

Disputed weighments

A verbal disagreement between a driver and an operator over a reading has no record to settle it. A sequential, tamper-evident digital ticket tied to a specific vehicle and timestamp gives both sides the same number to look at.

Reconciling a paper log at month-end

Hand-written or loosely-kept transaction logs are slow to reconcile against billing and easy to get wrong. A digital ticket sequence with no gaps is what actually makes automated reconciliation possible instead of a manual re-count.

04Why it matters

The economics of an unmanned weighbridge come from removing a fixed labor cost that scales with operating hours, not from the automation being flashy. A site running two shifts with a manned gate is paying for two operators; the same site unmanned pays for the automation hardware once and runs both shifts on it. The trust side matters just as much — a tamper-evident digital ticket with sequential numbering is a much harder thing to dispute or falsify than a handwritten slip, which matters directly to revenue accuracy on a per-transaction billing model and to a driver's confidence that the number they're shown is the number that gets billed.

Yes — automation changes who operates the equipment, not the trade-verification requirement. The deck and indicator still need the same stamping and calibration a manned weighbridge does, since the equipment is still being used for a commercial transaction.

What happens if a vehicle isn't recognized by RFID or ANPR?

The barrier stays shut and the system routes to a fallback — typically a QR-code scan, a remote intercom to staff, or a manual override logged with a reason code. Unmanned doesn't mean unsupervised; it means routine transactions don't need a person present.
